11 Things You Might Not Know About Me: Sunshine Blogger Nomination

Hi there, lady gang!

I’m popping in today to share that Powered by Sass was nominated for a Sunshine Blogger Award, which, essentially is a way to highlight various bloggers and allow them to share 11 facts about themselves involving blogging, life and everything in-between.

I was nominated by Will Daytrip for Donuts. Head on over to her website to check out her travels, daily musings and, of course, where to find delicious donuts.

Thanks for the nomination, Brenna!

Onward.

11 Things You Might Not Know About Me

Why did you decide to start blogging?

I started blogging after deciding to study abroad in 2011. I wanted to chronicle my experience preparing for and living abroad in Prague for a summer for my friends and family to read about back home. This blog was called The Power of Prague. Living in Prague for a summer and taking a travel writing class sparked my love for blogging, and shortly after I returned back to the States, Powered by Sass was born. It’s evolved a lot over the years, but I don’t know if it would exist without Prague.

11 things you might not know about me

What is your favorite topic to blog about?

As much as I enjoy adding humor to my blog and trying to keep it lighthearted, at the end of the day, I want my posts to remind you that you’re fine. Not like, Milo Ventimiglia fine, but fine as in you’re good and you’re doing the best you can (but you’re ALSO Milo Ventimiglia fine). I blog a lot about my life and experiences navigating adulthood in hopes my stories and the lessons I’ve learned help you feel secure in your choices and where you are at whatever stage of life you’re in.

What are your tips for promoting your content/blog?

I harass my friends until they share my shit on social media. And when that doesn’t work, I use platforms like Pinterest, StumbleUpon, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. I believe in authenticity, which can be both a good and bad thing when it comes to blogging and promoting content. I get really annoyed with the constant influx of “Want to find out how to be happy? Click the link in my bio to not be depressed ever again,” kind of stuff. So I try not to do that. Could I be more self-promotional? Yes. But I don’t ever want to annoy people and push them away. My blog is here for you to read or not to read. The choice is yours. But I’d love for you to stick around!

If you have to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

My mom’s pot roast with potatoes, carrots, brown rice and gravy. Or my magical, life-changing smoothie that I drink almost every single day.

How would your closest friends and family describe you?

Sassy, but loving. Generous, but cautious. Ambitious and driven, but careful. And also the best gosh damn daughter/sister/girlfriend/best friend they’ve ever had. And hilarious.

What is your dream vacation destination?

Ireland, but I went! I’d also love to travel to Greece, Hong Kong, Scotland, Norway, Iceland, India, Thailand and basically everywhere in the world. I love traveling. I wish I could get paid to travel and share what I learn, see and eat with you guys.

Staying positive when life has you down

What has been your proudest moment or biggest accomplishment to date?

Graduating high school without getting pregnant. But, truly, I’ve had several proud moments and I can’t choose just one. I had a lot of successes in college with acting and winning regional awards at competitions, graduating from college was a success, being open to life’s changes is a success and accomplishment, I’m sure running my first half-marathon will be pretty damn cool, etc. My 20’s have been good to me. I haven’t been without struggle, but the way I’ve handled what life has thrown my way has made me proud of the woman that I am.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Medical dramas. I’m not even secretive about it, but I love medical dramas and medical shows. A friend of mine who is a doctor was telling me about some patients he had in the ER the other day and I’m obsessed. Maybe a small part of me still wants to go to med school. Who knows. I held an infant’s brain once. You probably could have lived your life without ever knowing that, but science, especially biology and anatomy, is my favorite. Acting in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy would probably be one of my proudest accomplishments. Shonda, if you’re out there, holla.

Other than blogging, what are your pastimes?

I love watching TV for the purpose of studying actor’s mannerisms, especially comedies. I LOVE baking. I baked my very first king cake last week, I made a delicious rum cake for Thanksgiving, and I have a mean loaded cookie recipe. I also enjoy reading blogs and books written by funny women. Tina, Amy, Mindy, Lauren, I’ve read them all. Traveling and exploring new-to-me places are at the top of my favorite pastime list as well as staying active.

What is something about yourself you are trying to change?

How quick I am to go to anger and being less afraid to take risks. <- Fun little throwback article I wrote for Mavenly + Co.
